On Monday night, Camila Cabello put her powerful spin on a Michael Jackson classic.
The 20-year-old hit the stage alongside Incubus’ Michael Einziger and Zedd at the producer’s very own fundraiser for the American Civil Liberties Union in California, where she conquered Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.”
“I’m starting with the man in the mirror / I’m asking him to change his ways / And no message could have been any clearer / If you wanna make the world a better place / Take a look at yourself / And then make a change,” she sang to the crowd backed by a full band and set of soulful singers.
As a philanthropist during his time, Jackson previously donated the proceeds made by the track’s sales to Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, a camp in which focuses on childhood cancer.
“In a world filled with hate, we must still dare to hope,” the King of Pop once expressed in an interview. “In a world filled with anger, we must still dare to comfort. In a world filled with despair, we must still dare to dream. And in a world filled with distrust, we must still dare to believe.” Cabello used the same quote to caption an image from the event where she thanked Zedd for organizing a “beautiful night.”
Cabello has publicly voiced her opinion on the country’s current immigration issue. Late last year, she even penned an essay to PopSugar about her own personal experiences as an immigrant coming to America.
“When I hear a bigoted, racist man with power and influence speak with anger and ill-will about immigrants, I think, ‘what a fool,'” she wrote. “And, so next time. When anybody wants to tell you they want to build a ‘wall’ on our border, remember behind that wall is struggle. Determination. Hunger. Behind that wall, could be the next cure for cancer. The next scientist. The next artist. The next drummer. The next anything they work hard enough to become!”
The former 5H member closed out the night by performing her chart-topper “Bad Things” with Machine Gun Kelly. Other appearances that went down at the ACLU show included Bebe Rexha, Daya, Halsey, Imagine Dragons, Incubus, Macklemore, Miguel, Mija, Tinashe and Skrillex. Following the gathering, Zedd took to social media to express his gratitude for the evening’s turnout and participants.
